What is your name?
Shaun
Can you introduce yourself?
Hello, I'm Shaun. I have worked at Dental IT for the last 3 years and have been the helpdesk manager for about half of that time.
What's your day-to-day like at Dental IT?
I manage the helpdesk function of the business, planning who's doing what and going where.
What makes working in the dental industry rewarding?
There is a steep learning curve which is rewarding to get on top of.
What makes working in the dental industry challenging?
It can be quite stressful knowing that patients could be waiting for something to be fixed in order for their treatment to continue. There are lots of concepts that don't really apply to a 'typical' role in IT.
What has been the highlight during your time at Dental IT?
Extra curricular - 'Sports day', or the Christmas meal 2018. If in the office, then inducting new employees and meeting some good people.
What’s the best thing about working at Dental IT?
The fact that it's a small company, everybody who works here is just a phonecall or a Teams message away.
How has COVID-19 affected your work?
It has changed some of the queries we receive and has allowed some home working but otherwise it's about the same.
Who is your favourite customer and why?
There are some close seconds but it would be hard to look beyond Gary, the PM at Share a Smile Orthodontics. It's always nice to talk with him.
What has been the hardest thing to learn in your role?
Some of the dental concepts and how our work affects what is happening at the practice. This especially applies to digital imaging and how different scanners/equipment work.
What do you like about working in Sheffield and Hathersage?
Sheffield is very functional, has lots of parts, servers and PC's to hand and is good for the engineering function. Hathersage is the opposite and is a good place to work quietly.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Nothing terribly exciting - I enjoy a walk, gaming, sampling good ale/whiskey/gin/brandy (etc). What's the most exciting technology you work with?
Probably the bespoke software made by our developer, Andrew. It's made for us, so it does exactly what we need it to do.
What's the funniest query/problem you have had on the helpdesk?
We fix things daily by saying "hello". The reply tends to go like this "Hello, I have a problem with.....never mind, it's working now".
What's the hardest problem you have had to work on?
I'm not sure I can pinpoint one problem. Had a bit of a nightmare emptying a recycle bin once though!
What's the longest night you have ever worked and why?
A fairly tame one - It ended at about 1am, I was migrating an SQL server and application.
And finally, tell us something about you that we might not know?
I held a world record for 2 days.
